"The last warrior - German Hells Angels in Focus "

Lutz Schelhorn:

"The last warrior - German
Hells Angels in Focus "

The title was a great report by Kuno Kruse on the German Hells Angels   borrowed, and the story was published in 2008 in the "star". A title provokes the one hand, on the other hand, the self-understanding of the Hells Angels in many aspects of society  reflects.

"The Last Warrior" is the new project of photographer Lutz Schelhorn. Many myths and rumors revolve around the most famous motorcycle club in the world. Specifically German Hells Angels are currently the focus of the authorities and the media.
Hardly anyone is more able to get a clear picture of these men.

Anyway, Hells Angels polarize. Whether they are called famous or infamous, outsider or Local Heroes, rebels on wheels or criminal rockers, is as dazzling as their reputation their appearance. A close-knit community at the same time emphasizing the individual is actually a paradox, the Hells Angels practice for decades. They are global players of mixed races, religions, nations, and the experience of a life on the edge of the abyss. Established in the midst of the mass society but they are further away from her than many can think.

Lutz Schelhorn went for this work on a long tour in Germany. He uses the analog photographic technique, from small to large format image. Is only exposed to black-and-white negative film. Black and white was chosen to the phenomenon Hells Angels precision and reduced to approach and this motorcycle club, which is often perceived outward only his badge, to give a face.

The idea for this project came in the year 2008. Lutz Schelhorn had in his   already implemented some extraordinary projects short photographic career. What could be more natural than that he takes his membership in the Hells Angels club, his life and his brothers in the focus of the past 30 years. That he would like to reach over his photograph to put a picture of the club cemented in a different light.

Not a journalist, no - with focus and blur, light and shadow.

He deliberately uses existing stereotypes to photographically and dismantled this already on his next photo. The viewer is asked to look between the truths which he takes it, it is left to itself.
2 revised edition 17.02.2012. 192 pages, 288 photographs, of which about 100 portraits, all photos in duotone, printed on fine art paper. Size: 32.6 x 25.0 cm, clothbound,  exte German and English.

Excerpt:

Raphael, however, was braver than most. Alizel crouched behind the tree as he saw him approaching Luciferel slowly from behind, his soft footfalls beating a calm rhythm. Rafael had broad, even shoulders and was never in a hurry. Raphael, Alizel imagined, was a healer, although he may not have been aware of it at the time, since angels were never “injured” or in need of being healed. They were either perfectly healthy or in the Containment. Neither situation could be made better by anyone else’s help. The concepts of destruction and healing were only just beginning to dawn on them. Still, Raphael’s gentleness always made Alizel and the other Unranked feel safe in his presence, and he seemed to have a gift for fixing whatever troubled angels’ hearts. Alizel watched anxiously.
Luciferel was still hunched over the rail that guarded the Portal, and didn’t notice the other angel’s approach. Rafael stood there for a moment as if contemplating what to say, and then placed a firm hand on Luciferel’s shoulder.
Luciferel whipped his head around, fear shining in his eyes. His body relaxed slightly in Rafael’s presence but his expression was still guarded. Rafael’s countenance was serene but troubled. He was one of the few who could take in the full pain of another and still exude a soothing aura to those around him. Alizel wondered how much pain he had already absorbed from the rest of the angels…and how much more he would have to before this was all over.
Rafael just looked at his fellow Seraph, as if trying to probe the depths of Luciferel’s soul. He didn’t speak for several minutes, until Luciferel finally met his gaze. Rafael didn’t flinch, but the lines around his eyes drew downwards.
“What has happened to you?” Rafael seemed to already know, but asked his question more to see if Luciferel himself understood.
“I am becoming stronger,” he said, gasping for breath. If it weren’t for the seriousness of the situation, Alizel would have almost thought it to be a joke.
Rafael swept his soft brown eyes over Luciferel’s body and then raised his eyebrows. “You have rejected God’s power that sustains us. Your body is falling apart. If you do not let Him flow through you again, you will surely perish.”
“I will not die. I have found another power to sustain me.”
The shock of his words made Rafael look on in confusion. Alizel’s eyes narrowed as he listened. Was Luciferel bluffing? He certainly didn’t seem to be sustained.
“All this time,” Luciferel continued, each word labored, “we thought that was the only way that we could live. Yet only after blocking that vile substance did I find my own true power.”
“This power you speak of has left your body broken and damaged. This internal power cannot compete with God,” Raphael countered.
“It is still dormant, unused.” Luciferel waited to catch his breath before speaking more. “I am the first one to find this fiery power within me. I surely meant to perish. Why would I want to continue in a world where I must bow down to a Son of Mud? But my anger, my displeasure, my feelings against the current situation sustained my body. As these feelings grow stronger, so does my body. I just do not know how to channel this power yet.”
“You never doubted the Lord before. You must come back and let your body receive the Father again. You can still be bright!”
Alizel could tell Rafael’s mind was working furiously, probing to find a crack in the wall of resentment Luciferel had erected around himself.
“I was a fool then, surely. I did not understand that God only meant to betray us.” The more Luciferel talked, the stronger he seemed to become.
“There are uncertain times ahead, to be sure. But that is all the more reason we need you with us, as our leader.” Rafael was appealing to Luciferel’s sense of vanity now. “No one was able to lead as well as you or to command as much respect as you. What will we do without you?”
“Honestly?” Luciferel looked at him, but from Rafael’s expression it was obvious he didn’t see the same Luciferel looking back at him. “Honestly, I don’t care.”
Luciferel got up to leave. His gait was still hobbling, but he could walk away on his own. His words trailed after him. “Come find me if you come to your senses. Come find me if you want to be stronger.”

UNTANGLED

A Big Ball of Twine

We learn the rope of life by untying its knots.
—Jean Toomer
As we reached the first stopping point, we opened our packs and found chaos. The ropes that we had neatly packed were completely jumbled. The gear we had carefully stowed had been shifted around; it was an unrecognizable mess.
The jostling and shifting from the simple movement of the journey caused our coils of rope to transform from a neat roll to an entangled mess. We thought that we had taken care to pack them; the journey ensured that we had a mess to deal with.

Our mental backpacks are similar. Sometimes, regardless of the care we have taken, our world becomes a completely entangled mess in ways that we had not expected. Our journey ensures that we have a mess to deal with.
Many writers have used the terms connected and hyperconnected to describe our current state. I think that the term entanglement is more reflective of the state of our condition.
Connection implies that there has been an encounter but does not imply that the relationship is persistent. As will be discussed later, entanglement means two or more “things” have formed some type of permanent bond. This permanent bond is why I think that the term entanglement is more expressive of our actual condition.
Entanglement has many layers and many textures. It may be accidental or intentional. Entanglement may be in ways that may or may not be are attractive. Entanglement may or may not have relevancy to our lives. Entanglement may or may not have real meaning.
Entanglement may be the vines that catch your feet. Or it may be the limbs that brush your arms. Or it could be the rope that safely holds you onto the mountain.
Contemplation lets us mentally sort through the mess of entanglement that we all carry with us and allows us to repack meaningfully.

The Torment, The Shadow, The Heart by T.M. Shannon

The Torment, The Shadow, The Heart
by T.M. Shannon

How do you keep your writing different?

Well, the short answer is: I write it.  I sit down with an idea in mind, and I write it out.  It comes out the way I want it to, things happen that I want to, and people say what I want to.

The long answer is: writing is as personal as your eyes, your voice, your fingerprint.  It’s what makes you you.  Now don’t get me wrong, I’m all for influences: TSH is the perennial farmer with a destiny (Luke Skywalker, anyone?), Talbadas is the perennial “kingdom at risk of attack” (which is virtually every fantasy ever written).

It’s not a new idea: neither is the “famous last stand” (O.K. Corral, The Alamo); or, ”nice girl meets cranky boy; they start off hating but end up loving,” (Mr Darcy, how lovely of you to come!).  Ideas like these will always be with us; it’s the delivery that sets my writing apart.

It comes back to the fact that I write it.  Influences in mind, I’m happy to let slip where the idea for certain aspects (or even particular scenes) came from.  Then it becomes my delivery (my author’s “voice” so to speak), my version of the basic “plot.”

Then it gets expanded, contracted as drafts or edits come and go - in three months, I’ve already gone from the wordier first edition to a leaner (not yet pro-edited) second edition, which is 30 pages shorter and combines a few chapters together in a method I’m using for battle scenes in Volume Two.

It becomes my pride point: this is my style, the way I envision my writing.  And to a point, I will defend it.

Very recently, I got a review on my book.  2 Stars, mostly constructive, a little “snide comment” (prepare yourselves, reviewers don’t quite believe in professional courtesy - sorry about the watermarks, but did you think it’d be nice to tell me personally?).  There are a few style points I’ll correct, but not change 100% because its my writing.

What got me was the reviewer’s “fanboy” opinion on the forging scene.  Without giving too much away, the reviewer found herself lamenting that my writing wasn’t like her favourite author’s.  Two days it shook me (the next time I hope it’s easier!), leaving me thinking, “how dare you suggest I do what another author does?”

The reviewer didn’t understand how it upset me so much.  Well here’s the thing: I’m me.  I’ve spent all my life being me and I’m proud of me.  I write my way, not anybody else’s.  I have my influences, but that’s my sword to forge (and it’s more than just the sword being made - something the reviewer missed in her criticism).  It comes from my heart - and writing is a labour of love.  If you don’t like your writing, it hurts you, and you give it up to do something else.

Cheers,
T. M. Shannon

Excerpt 1 - “Grab”

Dresden got to his feet, stretched his arms and legs, and cracked his neck and knuckles both. He looked to his family with eyes that no longer showed compassion, but dreadful finality; and he made peace with the possibility that he may never see them again.
Dresden?” Kethis asked uncertainly. Bindie and Gorden peered at him.
This will not be,” he said bluntly, his voice calmly level, different. “I will not have my family, nor the people of my town, fear for their lives.” He had nothing else to say; and having uttered those words, he strode for the hallway.
Mum, where is he going?” Gorden asked excitedly. “Where are you going, Dresden?!”
He moved for the study, his eyes set in cold, calculating slits. “Out for a walk,” he growled…

The Wonderful Times of Godfrey and Chucky: Hot Spring by Daitoku Daiichi

Blog Post: Speeding and Reading

We love speed. Who doesn't? We want to zoom towards our target, we want our money to come in quickly and we want to see more natural wonders than anyone else. Godfrey Mann, as well as the people of Singapore, love speed, which is why they get along so well. Although Godfrey Mann is a blonde-haired foreigner with mystifying mannerisms, he experiences no major altercations in Singapore, which is populated by an Asian majority. He is not locked up in jail by corrupt authorities nor beaten up by xenophobic locals. Godfrey Mann enjoyed his Singapore experience so much that he gives favourable reviews about the small island to his friends, when asked. He had almost no negative opinion about Singapore (in part because he doesn't remember everything), which some of you may certainly find unbelievable. Then again, he's a fictional character.

I love speed too. I love computers that compute quickly, and people who can get right to the heart of the matter. The quicker someone solves a problem, the happier I am. Although my book collection is mostly made up of paper books, I have first launched my novel, 'Hot Spring', as an e-book so that it can be instantaneously delivered to the reader. No travel time to the bookstore, no waiting in the line. Putting my novel as an ebook allows me to deliver quickly without shortening my writing process, which would compromise the quality of my novel. I don't cut corners for my readers.

What is surprising about Singapore is that her people love speed because they are quite deprived of it. It is a fairly small island, and the best road to speed along would be the Ayer Rajah Expressway joining into East Coast Parkway. (part of it is featured in the picture) They connect the west to east side of the island (where the renowned Changi Airport is) in slightly over an hour when going at the legal speed of 70-90 km/h ( about 50 miles per hour). Singapore is really that small. As we all know, legal limits are only enforced when the cops are visibly on duty, and people usually go about 10 to 20 km/h more when driving. The cops and authorities define this as 'speeding'. Godfrey and Chucky enter the city with this expressway, and Godfrey will later chase down a nasty villain who tries to flee to the airport. The Singapore F1 Grand Prix is also another speeding event which enthralls Godfrey and other international tourists, so it is a key event in the novel.

Although some speeding in life is sometimes necessary, speeding is not for beginners, because it is dangerous and seductive. The best speeders only speed when they have to, and do not speed for speeding's sake. They get their thrills from a wide variety of activities, one of them books. This does not apply merely to speeding on the road, but also to speeding through life, its lessons and details. If we speed on the road, we miss the scenery; if we speed through life, we miss its varied tastes and colors. Our brains can actually degenerate if we speed through life! This is a major theme in Hot Spring, where we can observe how the prosperity of the fast life sometimes make us vulnerable mentally.

And finally onto speed reading. I do speed read from time to time. I speed read news articles, especially when they are on topics that have been going on for a long time (eg. for the last decade), especially along the lines of 'China is to blame for American problems' or 'USA is to blame for China's problems'. However, I don't speed read fiction when I want to have a good time. It doesn't make sense. Everything becomes boring. Sure it's a good idea to read more carefully for your favorite chapters and characters. Speed-reading fiction is like gulping down food without tasting it. People gulp down food quickly only for three reasons: the food does not taste good, they are in a rush, or they have a bad habit of gulping. If there is good food and plenty of time, and the person still swallows it quickly anyway, that person is a sad, pathetic creature who is likely to be very cruel and crass.

So let us enjoy reading more than speeding, and keep ourselves away from those who are trying to fall sick. Read all about speeding into, speeding around, and speeding out of a tropical city in 'Hot Spring'. Be like Chucky, hang on to the driver, and Gawdspeed!

Book tour giveaway Epsilon AR by Zackery Humphreys

Epsilon AR
by Zackery Humphreys

About The Author:

Zackery Alexander Humphreys is a Novelist, Actor and Poet who occasionally dabbles in Screen Writing and Play Writing.

Book Description:

Hundreds of years into the future, mankind has gone under ground to relocate to the beautiful city of Epsilon. Epsilon is run by a strong, secretive government that keeps its citizens in check by subtle manipulation and strict schedules. No one questions its authority and no one is unhappy. ALN-896, an average man who is just trying to live a normal life, begins to have dreams; something strange and rare in Epsilon. In his dreams, he meets a man named Harry and everything is fine- until Harry dies. When ALN-896 wakes up, he shrugs it off as if nothing has happened. It was only a dream. But then the next day, he is suddenly arrested and sent to prison for killing Harry, whom ALN-896 assumed was just a figment of his imagination. Now inside prison, ALN-896 begins to learn about everything the government of Epsilon has been doing and he plans on escaping. Not only from prison, but from Epsilon. This one decision turns him against everything he has ever known and forces him to face against centuries of lies. To escape means to live. But what will it cost?

Excerpts:

A black-and-white tie...
----
Thoughts froze within his mind. Spit bubbled through his pursed lips.
ALN-896 finally managed to pull away from the exposed wire. He fell to the ground and wiped away the spit dribbling down his cheek. His heart raced, and sweat poured down his body.
That was the most painful sensation he had ever experienced.
I never should have grabbed that wire...
ALN-896 stood up slowly and looked around. No one saw what had just happened. He was alone on the desolate stretch of Simov Street.
Fortunately, I did not get hurt.
Instead of continuing, he decided to get back into his car and let a nice cup of tea calm him.
From the center console of the car, green tea was automatically dispensed into a cup. He let the liquid slide down his throat, easing every muscle that had tensed. He melted into his plush seat as he let his mind come to a halt. Then the silence was interrupted by a robotic voice. “ALN- 896, your vitals are irregular. Is everything all right?”
Everything is fine. I went to inspect one of the house's trashcans as I was instructed to, but I noticed an exposed wire on the ground. I went to cover it back up when it...”
ALN-896 wasn't quite sure what had actually happened when he touched the wire. He hadn’t been electrocuted, but something strange had occurred. The only thing he could get out of the experience was that he had seen a black-and-white tie floating in the darkness behind his closed eyelids. Nothing surrounded it, but he knew it had been attached to a body. One he hadn’t been able see, but one he knew existed somewhere within the black.
Irrelevant.
When it...,” ALN-896 stumbled. “When it shocked me,” he lied.
Your job still needs to be completed. You still need to inspect the trashcans for Monday's workday. After your tea, you need to continue.”
Yes, I understand.”
